About this tool

A percentage increase expresses growth relative to where you started: (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100 — dividing by the magnitude of the original value. It is the number behind pay rises (“a 6% increase”), price rises, audience growth and investment returns — and it is always relative to the original, which is why small bases produce dramatic percentages.

Enter the old value and the new value; the calculator returns the increase as a percentage and states the raw difference alongside, so a “50% increase” on a base of 4 (now 6) never masquerades as a big absolute change.

How to use it

  1. Enter the original value in “From”.
  2. Enter the new value in “To”.
  3. The result is the percentage increase (a negative result means the value actually decreased).

Frequently asked questions

How is percent change calculated?

Percent change = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. Dividing by the original value is what makes it a relative change: going from 80 to 100 is +25%, and going back from 100 to 80 is −20% — the two directions are not mirror images.

What is a 100% increase?

Doubling. A 100% increase means the value grew by its own amount: 50 → 100. A 200% increase is tripling (50 → 150).

How do I calculate a pay rise in percent?

Divide the raise by your old salary and multiply by 100: a $3,000 rise on $50,000 is 6% — or just enter 50000 and 53000 above.
