About this tool
Kaomoji are Japanese emoticons built from characters — brackets for the head, dots and marks for the face — read upright, unlike Western :-) emoticons that you tilt your head to see. They carry far more expression than emoji in plain text: the hug (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ, the shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, and the table flip (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ (with its polite reversal, putting the table back: ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ)) are recognised all over the internet.
Because kaomoji are ordinary text, they work where emoji cannot — in usernames, plain-text emails, code comments and forums — and they paste identically everywhere. The faces are grouped by mood; click any face to copy it, and the whole expression goes to your clipboard as one piece.
How to use it
- Browse the faces by mood and find the one you need.
- Click a face to copy the whole expression.
- Paste it into your message, post or username.
Frequently asked questions
What does kaomoji mean?
Kaomoji (顔文字) is Japanese for “face characters” — emoticons assembled from text characters, popularised on Japanese message boards and now used worldwide.
Why do kaomoji look right-side up?
Unlike Western emoticons such as :-) which are read sideways, kaomoji are designed to be read normally, with brackets forming the outline of the face — a style that allows much more detailed expressions.
Can I use kaomoji in usernames?
Usually yes, though some platforms limit which characters a username may contain. They always work in posts, messages and bios.
