Average Calculator
Paste any list of numbers and get the full picture: mean, median, mode, sum, count and range.
About this tool
“Average” is three different numbers wearing one coat, and which one you want depends on the data. The mean (sum ÷ count) is the familiar one, but one extreme value can drag it; the median (the middle value) resists outliers, which is why house prices are quoted as medians; the mode is the most frequent value. This calculator gives you all three, plus the sum, count and range, from any list you paste.
Separate numbers with spaces, commas or line breaks — a column copied from a spreadsheet works as-is. How entries are read: a comma followed by exactly three digits is a thousands separator, so 1,000 counts as one thousand; any other comma separates two numbers. An entry that starts with a number counts as that number ($100 counts as 100, and a minus sign pasted from a word processor works); entries with no number in them are ignored, and the calculator tells you how many were skipped. Results are shown to up to 4 decimal places, and if every number in the list is different there is no mode, so the mode reads “—”. Everything is computed in your browser, so data you paste is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Paste or type your numbers (spaces, commas or new lines all work).
- Read the mean, median and mode, plus the sum, count and range.
- If the mean and median differ a lot, an outlier is pulling the mean — the median is usually the fairer “typical” value.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
Mean is the sum divided by the count. Median is the middle value when sorted (or the average of the two middle values). Mode is the value that appears most often. A data set can have a mean of 18, a median of 15.5 and a mode of 4 — all correct, all “averages”.
Which average should I use?
Mean for evenly-spread data like test scores; median when extremes skew the picture (incomes, house prices, response times); mode for categories and most-common outcomes.
How many numbers can I paste?
Thousands — the computation is instant and entirely local.
